What are your goals?

What are the risks?
      Causes of accidental deaths among 15-24 year olds in USA (CDC)
      Most common causes of injuries on NOLS courses
      Identify human, environmental and activity risks

How do the risks relate to your goals?
      Risk = Probability x Severity x Time
      Consider whether the risks:
           - fit your institutional risk tolerance
           - fit your learning goals
           - are "reasonable"
           - can be managed appropriately by the instructional team

How will you manage the risks?
      Avoid - choose not to do the activity
      Mitigate - reduce the risk through safety equipment or limits
      Manage - train staff to manage risk using industry standards
           - how do you determine industry standards?
           - suggestions for ways to manage low and high risk activities
           - plan to respond to incidents in the field

What do you review when you're out of the field?
      Qualitative review
      Quantitative review
                - hazards, near misses, and incidents
